Day to Day:
The Principal Government & Defense Technology Architect serves as the senior technical advisor and trusted technical partner to the Government & Defense Business Unit IT Owner. This role is responsible for defining, governing, and advancing the technology, cybersecurity, compliance, and architecture strategy supporting Client’s Supply Chain's Government & Defense business.
The position serves as the primary technical representative for Government & Defense across Information Technology Services (ITS), Information Security, Enterprise Architecture, Procurement, Operations, external technology partners, and customer-facing initiatives. The role is accountable for ensuring Government & Defense solutions align with business objectives, enterprise standards, cybersecurity requirements, operational support models, and government contractual obligations.
This individual leads the design and evaluation of secure cloud, infrastructure, network, application, integration, and data architectures supporting Government & Defense operations, while ensuring the protection of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and other sensitive information. The role provides technical leadership for architecture reviews, cybersecurity assessments, technology roadmaps, vendor evaluations, solution development, and strategic technology initiatives.
The Principal Government & Defense Technology Architect partners closely with ITS to define technical requirements, coordinate service delivery, influence platform roadmaps, resolve complex architectural challenges, and ensure Government & Defense requirements are appropriately represented across enterprise technology initiatives. The position must possess a broad understanding of client’s technology landscape, including cloud platforms, cybersecurity, global infrastructure services, enterprise applications, transportation and warehouse management systems, integration architectures, and logistics operations.
The role maintains expertise in applicable regulatory and contractual requirements, including NIST, CMMC, DFARS, CUI handling practices, cybersecurity best practices, and government-focused technology environments. Additionally, the position supports business growth by providing technical leadership for customer opportunities, solution development activities, architecture reviews, RFP responses, vendor selection efforts, and Government & Defense strategic initiatives.
- Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Serve as the senior technical advisor to the Government & Defense Business Unit IT Owner, providing strategic guidance on architecture, cybersecurity, compliance, cloud, infrastructure, network, application, and data platform initiatives.
- Define and maintain Government & Defense technology standards, reference architectures, roadmaps, and technical governance processes.
- Design and evaluate secure, scalable, and supportable solutions that align with business objectives, customer requirements, enterprise standards, and operational support models.
- Lead architecture reviews and provide technical oversight for new applications, infrastructure, cloud services, integrations, and technology platforms.
- Government & Defense Cybersecurity & Compliance
- Serve as the technical authority for the protection of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and other sensitive government-related information.
- Ensure technology solutions align with applicable cybersecurity and compliance requirements, including NIST, CMMC, DFARS, corporate security policies, and contractual obligations.
- Lead security evaluations, risk assessments, vulnerability remediation planning, and architecture hardening activities for Government & Defense systems and services.
- Partner with Information Security, ISM, Enterprise Architecture, and external assessors to support audits, assessments, compliance initiatives, and remediation programs.
- ITS Engagement & Technical Representation
- Act as the primary technical liaison between Government & Defense and Client’s Information Technology Services (ITS).
- Represent Government & Defense technical requirements, priorities, and architectural direction across ITS teams responsible for infrastructure, cloud platforms, networking, hosting, security, application support, and managed services.
- Coordinate technical planning, operational readiness, service transition, support model development, and issue resolution activities with ITS and other Client technology organizations.
- Serve as the authoritative technical representative for Government & Defense during architecture reviews, operational escalations, technology planning sessions, and strategic initiatives.
- Enterprise Applications & Logistics Technology
- Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for logistics and supply chain technology platforms, including transportation, warehouse management, integration, visibility, and operational technology solutions.
- Maintain working knowledge of platforms such as Oracle Transportation Management (OTM), Manhattan WMS, Blue Yonder WMS, Blue Yonder ISM, integration platforms, and related logistics technologies.
- Evaluate new business requirements and determine architectural, operational, cybersecurity, and support impacts across the technology ecosystem.
- Ensure Government & Defense solutions integrate effectively with enterprise applications while meeting security, compliance, and operational requirements.
- Vendor, Procurement & Solution Development
- Support technology procurement activities through technical requirements definition, architecture reviews, solution evaluations, vendor assessments, and RFP support.
- Evaluate software, cloud, consulting, and managed service provider solutions for architectural fit, cybersecurity posture, operational supportability, compliance alignment, and total cost of ownership.
- Review Statements of Work, technical designs, support models, and implementation approaches to ensure alignment with Government & Defense objectives.
- Risk Management & Governance
- Maintain technology and cybersecurity risk registers, documenting identified risks, remediation plans, mitigation strategies, and risk acceptance decisions.
- Translate complex technical risks and architecture decisions into business terms suitable for executive leadership, operations, and customer stakeholders.
- Develop actionable remediation plans and work with technology teams to ensure timely resolution of identified deficiencies.
- Communication, Mentorship & Stakeholder Engagement
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to executive leadership, business stakeholders, operations teams, customers, vendors, and technology partners.
- Mentor and guide architects, engineers, analysts, and project teams on cybersecurity best practices, architecture standards, secure design principles, and Government & Defense requirements.
- Promote collaboration across Government & Defense, Information Security, Enterprise Architecture, ITS, Procurement, and Operations teams to ensure successful delivery of strategic initiatives.
