What you’ll do:
- Develop readable, testable, efficient bare-metal firmware in modern C++.
- Bring up new boards and debug hardware–software issues using schematics, datasheets, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab equipment.
- Write device drivers and work with low-level interfaces and communication protocols.
- Design hardware abstraction layers and contribute to testing on real hardware.
- Analyze system failure modes and help build safety into firmware and hardware interactions.
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and cross-functional engineering decisions.
- Help establish sound practices as the team grows; experienced engineers may also mentor others while remaining hands-on.
What we’re looking for:
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional embedded software development experience, including substantial hands-on bare-metal firmware work.
- Strong production experience in modern C++ or Rust.
- Experience integrating hardware and software, developing drivers, and working closely with new board development.
- Familiarity with low-level protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART, or CAN.
- Comfort debugging on the bench and taking ownership in a fast-moving development environment.
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE-Q clearance.
Particularly valuable experience:
- Production-level verification and deployment of firmware, including DO-178 or comparable formal processes.
- Shipping firmware for safety-critical systems, such as medical devices or avionics.
- Bootloaders, firmware updates, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or closed-loop controls.
- Embedded firmware security.
- Strong electrical engineering experience alongside firmware development.
This is a technical-first opportunity. Lead-level candidates should expect to continue writing code and solving engineering problems directly.
