MUST:
- 10+ years of experience in accounting and reporting roles within the insurance industry, either with an insurance carrier or top-tier audit firm
- Solid technology skills, including advanced Excel
- Two backgrounds they could have:
- Insurance reporting and investment reporting experience – preferred background (Insurance reporting: someone who has been an Assistant Controller for an insurance company and has experience with insurance statutory reporting, including the complexities of schedules and statutory reporting)
OR
- Investment reporting background from either the financial services or insurance industry (e.g., fixed income, derivatives, alternatives, or statutory investment accounting)
- Knowledge of investment footnotes and Yellow Books/Blue Books
- Manager level or higher; needs true management experience and experience managing direct reports (they will manage a team of 7)
- Bachelor's degree required
- Experience putting together reporting schedules
- Experience with the general ledger
- Strong finance transformation experience, including automation and improving the close process
- Experience overseeing the close process / has been involved as a manager in the close process
PLUS:
- NAIC knowledge
- CPA or Master's degree
- Clearwater experience for investment reporting

Our client, a fast-growing insurance company, is seeking a Director of Insurance Investment Accounting to join their team. This role is hybrid onsite in Durham, NC. In this Director-level Investment Accounting role, you will provide leadership and oversight for the accounting and reporting of a complex and growing investment portfolio. The position will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of investment accounting activities while helping the team effectively manage the monthly and quarterly reporting cycles. This Director will manage a team of 7 investment accounting professionals.
You will take a hands-on leadership role in the monthly investment accounting close process, overseeing activities and ensuring deadlines are consistently met. You will also review investment-related components of quarterly financial statements, including U.S. GAAP, statutory reporting, and other regulatory or compliance filings. A strong focus on process improvement will be important, with an emphasis on identifying ways to improve reporting quality, efficiency, automation, and scalability as the organization continues to grow.
The role will work closely with internal teams across Investments, Treasury, Financial Reporting, and other business functions, as well as external investment accounting and asset management service providers. You will help resolve accounting and reporting issues, support the onboarding and accounting treatment of new investment transactions, and strengthen processes and controls across the function.
In addition to technical and operational responsibilities, this individual will provide leadership, coaching, and professional development to investment accounting team members. The ideal candidate will bring a continuous-improvement mindset and be comfortable balancing hands-on accounting expertise with team leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and process transformation.
