Automation Systems Engineer

Job Description

This role requires the individual to apply their technical knowledge and experience for successful HVAC/BAS systems database and program development, along with the creation of custom graphics as needed for assigned projects. The role also requires a proficient level of BAS controls and mechanical system knowledge, as well as programming, field experience, and proficiency with industry-standard software and protocols. In addition, this non-field role may support the pre-functional and functional testing of developed code remotely from an office location. Functional systems software test scripts are developed from approved hardware designs and system sequences of operation and turned over to the field team responsible for testing and validating program code compliance against contract requirements. The position requires a proficient level of programming and field experience in HVAC systems and BAS applications.


Essential Functions

  • Supports design engineering development and reviews to ensure hardware device inclusion is sufficient to meet the intent of the system sequence of operations.
  • Performs and leads software development in the generation of control system databases, programs, and system graphics for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates with Project Managers, Engineers, and Field Technicians to ensure timely completion of projects within budget and according to project specifications.
  • Collaborates with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and contractors to ensure proper integration of HVAC controls programming with overall building systems.
  • Supports the execution of initial point-to-point commissioning activities remotely from the office, as needed.
  • Supports remote troubleshooting of local and wide area network issues at project sites.
  • Utilizes computer hardware and software to support and execute pre-functional testing of system software in accordance with the project sequence of operations.
  • Participates remotely in final functional testing related to industry standards, third-party commissioning, LEED, Title 24, and Guideline 36 requirements, as applicable.
  • Possesses or develops the knowledge necessary to efficiently program and support various OEM building automation product lines.
  • Develops the skills to effectively integrate third-party vendor products, systems, and communication protocols.
  • Assists in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving HVAC controls issues, including software bugs, communication failures, and hardware malfunctions.
  • Analyzes system performance, identifies inefficiencies, and recommends corrective actions.
  • Develops, customizes, and optimizes HVAC control strategies using industry-standard protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Conducts design reviews, peer evaluations, and simulations to validate system performance, reliability, and safe operation.
  • Supports commissioning coordination meetings for programming sequences and functional test script development when required.
  • Assists with project turnover from construction to the service team by reviewing programming, sequences, and database backups.
  • Assists Design Engineers in validating sequences of operation against design-build and contract requirements.
  • Manages assigned project schedules and budgets while providing regular status updates.
  • Communicates effectively with project team members regarding work status, progress, obstacles, and project needs using company communication and project management tools.
  • Follows established programming standards and engineering best practices.
  • Effectively manages time, work progress, and project costs using company operational processes and tools.
  • Adheres to company cybersecurity policies and standards.
  • Practices safe work habits and complies with office and project site safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Associate's degree in a technical field or 2–5 years of related experience in Building Automation Systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in HVAC Controls Programming or Building Automation Systems are a plus.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard programming languages, protocols, and software tools, including BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, Niagara Framework, etc.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Windows operating systems, file management, TCP/IP networking, and web navigation.
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize work and perform in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently while taking ownership of assigned projects.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license required.
