This is primarily a material handling and logistics position, not a hands-on hazardous waste processing role. The technician will not directly touch waste and will wear appropriate PPE while performing waste-related duties.

The role involves creating and applying waste labels, moving sealed waste drums with the proper equipment, transporting materials between campus locations, and assisting with shipping and receiving.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Shipping/receiving, warehouse, delivery, logistics, or material handling experience
  • Comfortable driving a company vehicle across a large campus
  • Able to repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable moving 5-gallon and 55-gallon containers using appropriate material handling equipment
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow specific procedures
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Comfortable wearing required PPE
  • Able to perform a physically active job involving lifting, bending, twisting, walking, and material movement

Key Responsibilities

Waste Material Handling

  • Create, print, and apply appropriate waste labels to containers and drums
  • Use proper material handling equipment to move sealed waste containers to designated storage areas
  • Transport 5-gallon and 55-gallon containers across the facility
  • Inspect containers and verify labeling and shipping requirements
  • Close, secure, and palletize drums according to established procedures
  • Maintain accurate waste tracking and compliance documentation
  • Follow established safety procedures and wear required PPE
  • Communicate any labeling, documentation, or compliance issues to the appropriate personnel

Shipping & Receiving

  • Receive and sort incoming packages and pallets
  • Distribute packages to appropriate campus locations
  • Prepare outbound shipments
  • Create and verify shipping labels and documentation
  • Coordinate pickups and deliveries with shipping and freight providers
  • Assist with general shipping/receiving and logistics activities as needed

Campus Transportation

  • Drive a company vehicle between buildings and locations across the campus
  • Transport materials, tools, packages, and properly contained waste
  • Follow all vehicle and workplace safety procedures

Inventory & General Support

  • Maintain inventory of labels, liners, zip ties, pallets, and shipping supplies
  • Keep material handling and storage areas clean and organized
  • Use handheld scanners, computer systems, and other logistics tools as required
  • Manage multiple requests and priorities while maintaining accuracy

Preferred Experience

  • Previous hazardous material or hazardous waste environment experience
  • Shipping/receiving or warehouse experience
  • Delivery driver experience
  • Experience in a laboratory, pharmaceutical, research, industrial, or similar regulated facility
  • Familiarity with DOT hazardous materials requirements
  • Forklift or other material handling equipment experience
  • OSHA or hazardous materials safety training
  • Experience with handheld scanners or warehouse/shipping software

Ideal Candidate Profile

A shipping/receiving, warehouse, delivery, or material handling professional who is dependable, physically capable, safety-conscious, and comfortable following detailed procedures. Candidates do not necessarily need prior hazardous waste experience if they have strong logistics/material handling experience and can learn the compliance requirements.

Former UPS/FedEx-style delivery drivers, warehouse associates, shipping/receiving associates, material handlers, or logistics technicians could translate well into this position.
