Position Overview
The Project Controller will be based out of Bernards’ San Fernando office and will oversee a team of four project accountants. This role is pivotal in managing the financial performance of our construction projects, ensuring adherence to budgets, compliance with GAAP, and accurate revenue recognition. The Project Controller will collaborate closely with project managers and site teams, visiting project sites approximately twice a month to provide financial insights and ensure alignment with company objectives.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of four project accountants, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Develop, monitor, and maintain project budgets, forecasts, and cost controls across multiple projects.
- Oversee revenue recognition processes, ensuring compliance with GAAP and construction industry standards.
- Prepare and present detailed financial reports, including job cost reports, variance analyses, and cash flow projections.
- Manage subcontractor and vendor payments, ensuring adherence to contract terms and resolving any discrepancies.
- Support project teams with financial impact analysis for change orders and other project adjustments.
- Conduct periodic site visits (approximately twice a month) to review project progress and financial alignment.
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies and internal controls.
- Collaborate with leadership on audits, risk assessments, and other strategic financial initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in project accounting or financial management within the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and proven expertise in revenue recognition practices specific to construction.
- Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring teams.
- Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Procore, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
- CPA, CMA, or another relevant certification is highly preferred.
